Citeproof for Claude
Check citations from inside Claude
Citeproof looks up the references you paste into Claude in Crossref, DataCite, OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar, with doi.org to resolve DOIs, and tells you which ones it found, which it could not find, and which have a DOI that points somewhere else. It only reports what those indexes return.
Set up
- In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector, and paste
https://claude.citeproof.dev/claude/mcp - Select Connect and sign in to your Citeproof account, or create one
- Approve the connection. The page names where you are being sent back to
- In a chat, turn the connector on from the tools menu
No account is needed to try it: extract_references and single lookups are free without signing in, sharing an hourly cap across all visitors. Sign in for full checks, saved history and exports. You need a Claude plan that allows custom connectors. On Team and Enterprise plans an owner adds the connector first.
What to ask
- "Check these references: ..." Then paste the reference list
- "Does this DOI match my citation?" With the DOI and the citation as you wrote it
- "Is doi:10.1038/nature14539 a real paper? Give me its title and year."
- "Does the abstract of arXiv:1706.03762 support the claim that the model uses no recurrence?"
- "Show my last five Citeproof checks."
- "Export my latest check as BibTeX."

| Tool | What it does | Uses a check |
|---|---|---|
| check_citations | Looks up every reference in a pasted text and saves the result to your history | Yes, one |

Checks and plans
Every account includes 10 free checks a month. Pro is $9/month for 100 checks a month. You subscribe, cancel and get receipts on your account page; nothing can be bought from inside Claude.
A repeated or retried request is counted once. If none of the indexes could be reached, the check is given back. Subscription terms
What it cannot do
- Scholarly works only. Not case law, patents, news or web pages
- "Not found" means no matching record in these indexes. Books, theses and very new work can be missing, so check the original source
- Claim evidence comes from the abstract, not the full text, and never says a claim is true or false
- It does not write, suggest or reformat citations
If something goes wrong
- Claude asks you to sign in again: connections lapse after 30 days without use. Reconnect in Settings, Connectors
- "You've used all 10 checks for this month": the message gives the date they reset. Your account page shows the same count
- "Could not be verified": an index did not answer. Try again in a few minutes. If none of them could be reached, the check is not counted
- You want Claude disconnected: use Disconnect Claude on your account page, or remove the connector in Claude
- Anything else: write to ethan@leandiscoverygroup.com with the run_id from the result
