Citeproof Terms of Service
Last updated: October 7, 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and Lean Discovery Group LLC ("we" or "us"), which operates Citeproof, covering your use of the Citeproof website and the Citeproof app in ChatGPT. By using Citeproof, you agree to them. Contact: ethan@leandiscoverygroup.com.
1. The service
Citeproof looks up the references in text you submit in public bibliographic databases (Crossref, DataCite, OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar, plus doi.org), reports whether each one matches a real record, and can quote abstract sentences related to a claim. It does not write citations for you or decide whether a claim is true.
2. No guarantee of accuracy
Results are automated and can be incomplete or wrong. The databases may be missing works (especially books, theses, very new or non-indexed works) or contain errors. A "not found" result does not prove that a work doesn't exist, and a "verified" result does not prove that the work supports what you cite it for. Evidence is based on abstracts, not full papers. You are responsible for checking important results yourself before you rely on them, for example in academic, legal, medical or professional work.
3. Eligibility and accounts
You must be at least 13 years old, with a parent or guardian's permission if you are under the age of majority where you live. Keep your sign-in secure, and tell us if you think your account was used without permission.
4. Usage limits
- Use of Citeproof is subject to usage limits, currently 5 checks per week, resetting every Monday. Unused checks don't roll over.
- We may change usage limits. We will post changes on the website before they take effect.
5. Acceptable use
Don't misuse Citeproof: no attempts to get around usage limits or security, no automated bulk scraping or reselling of the service, no overloading it, and no unlawful content or use. We may suspend or end access for misuse.
6. Your content
You keep all rights to the text you submit. You give us permission to process it only to provide Citeproof to you, as described in the Privacy Policy. Don't submit content you don't have the right to share.
7. Third-party services and data
Bibliographic data comes from third parties and is subject to their terms and licenses. Use in ChatGPT is also subject to OpenAI's terms. We are not responsible for third-party services.
8. Disclaimers
Citeproof is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or uninterrupted availability, to the fullest extent the law allows.
9. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Lean Discovery Group LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost grades, profits or data. Our total liability for any claim relating to Citeproof is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or US$50 if you paid nothing.
10. Changes and termination
We may update these terms. We will post changes here, update the date above and, for material changes, give notice before they take effect. You can stop using Citeproof at any time. We may suspend or end the service with reasonable notice where possible.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Richmond, Virginia, unless the law where you live requires otherwise.
